Reading and daily journal entries were the catalyst to Patricia’s first novel, Reflections of a Quiet Storm, published by an independent publisher in 2009. An avid reader, her previous published work includes two books, multiple short stories, monthly health care columns for an online magazine, and several health care articles for a local newspaper. She also enjoys reading Women’s Fiction and Romance novels, which occupy many seats on her bookshelves.

Patricia is a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, she holds Adjunct Nursing Faculty positions at two universities. She is a member of the National Black Nurses Association/Council of Black Nurses – L.A., Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Black Nurses Rock, California Association of Nurse Practitioners, and International Black Writers & Artists.

Patricia’s church home is Greater Zion Church Family in Compton, CA. She considers music, reading, and prayer as the keys to relaxation and creativity, and she loves spending time with her family.

Two Steps Past the Altar

As Sasha stood in the mirror, admiring how well the dress complimented her figure, she paused. Dad.

She rushed out the room, holding up the bottom of her dress so she wouldn’t trip as she made her way into the living room. Sasha whirled around. “You like my dress?”

“It looks nice,” he said, walking right past her.

Sasha tilted her head. “What’s wrong, Dad?” He frowned and mumbled under his breath before opening the refrigerator. From the expression on his face, something must have happened.

“Hi, hon,” her mother said. “When’d you get in town?”

Sasha turned and saw her mother hugging Damien.

“This morning,” Damien said, peering at Sasha beneath a raised brow as he sat in a corner chair in the living room.

Sasha squinted at him and moved her attention back to her father in the kitchen. Her dad’s behavior made sense now. Damien had told him. Why else would her dad be acting so strange? She glared at Damien, who slightly shrugged his shoulders looking unbothered.

“What’s the occasion for the dress?” Her dad’s tone stung like acid.

“Tamar’s wedding is Sunday,” Sasha explained. “This is my bridesmaid dress.”

“Humph. A Sunday wedding? So, I’m guessing you won’t be at church,” her dad said.

Her shoulders felt heavy from the disappointment in his voice. “No, I won’t be there. Ebony’s leading the Women in Prosperity Ministry until my job slows down. Right now, between me trying to get this promotion, my business trips to Atlanta, and Tamar’s wedding, I’m swamped.”

Her father scrunched his face but didn’t comment.

“We understand, and you’re planning your own wedding. This gown looks nice on you,” her mother said, touching the fabric. “Fits you perfectly. Ebony did an excellent job, and I’m loving the color. Doesn’t it look good on her, Damien?”

With his attention on Sasha, Damien got up and crossed the room, closing the space between them as he examined her in the dress. “Yes, she looks stunning. But she always does.”

Sasha forced her pouty lips to smile. “Thank you,” she said, taking a moment to observe his well-sculpted physique. Even in his camouflage cargo pants and black t-shirt, he could turn a few heads any day. But she refused to allow his striking appearance or cotton candy sweet talk to woo her. The fact remained; he had disrespected her, and their wedding was off. If he couldn’t be faithful to her for 365 days, how in the world could he commit to a lifetime?

He stretched out his arms for an embrace, and her skin bristled. Just the thought of his touch made her cringe. At the same time, she knew if she avoided his hug, it would raise questions from her parents that she didn’t feel like discussing. She’d just have to play this one out.

Her back stiff, she allowed him to wrap his arms around her briefly and then stepped back. “I…uh, I didn’t know you were coming down today. You usually call first.”

Priscilla reasoned why God would choose her to be the carrier of life. Married for almost fifteen years, sexual pleasures only happened on special occasions. Often without romance, and starting with a touch here, feel there, and a real quick release on his part. The thought of making a baby vanished long ago.

In reality, indecisiveness plagued her like a severe toothache regarding being a wife or instead, being his wife. Her mind and ambitions settled on being the audacious executive she fancied herself. Relinquishing all thoughts of motherhood, that were now nowhere in the plan.

Many are the plans of man…but it is the Lord’s plans that prevail.

Dr. Thorpe’s private practice became her haven, the place where swift answers and solutions to her most pressing issues materialized. Today, he acted as the grim reaper delivering death-blows instead of solutions. Death to her plans, dreams, and her one hundred and thirty-five-pound figure. She worked hard for her body, and to destroy it for a child neither of them wanted put her in a complete stupor.

As she sat in a makeshift gown barely covering her breasts, Priscilla sighed. Moving to get more comfortable on the green leather table-bed covered with a sheet of wrinkled white paper, she felt hopeless. Priscilla swung her legs as though they could propel her into another space in time. She took a deep breath. Lumps in her throat seemed to suffocate her and caused her to give in to the explosive stream of tears cascading down her face.

How am I going to care for a child in the midst of running a company? Marshall’s Mortgage a premier mortgage company and her baby, her purpose that bequeathed her employees who became family. A creative concept and idea birthed right after leaving college with a degree in accounting and nourished with intensity and integrity. The thought of leaving it with anyone for more than a day or two frightened her. Because of this baby, she would have no choice.

“Priscilla? Are you alright?” Dr. Thorpe inquired.

Startled by his voice and still confused, she hadn’t noticed his return. “Dr. Thorpe, I’m not alright. This pregnancy is so unexpected. I thought maybe the flu or a virus. But this? I took a darn pill every day since Steven and I married. They’re supposed to prevent this. I don’t understand how it could happen,” she responded with a pant and sniffle between words.

“I’ve been an OB doctor for well over twenty years, and I promise I see women who swear they took their birth-control pill on time and still got pregnant. I know you are quite familiar with God and His work. And, I consider us close friends so I can say this.”

Priscilla nodded.

“No matter what and how we try, we can never abort the plans of God. He knows this child is going to gain a complete knowledge of Him. The Father chose you and Steven to protect, nurture, and train him or her in the way they should go. Priscilla instead of the questions why and how be excited, and grateful God chose you.”

“I don’t feel like this is something I want to do. I don’t even know if I can do it.”

      Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Author Danyelle Scroggins

       One thing is for sure, if you know Author Danyelle Scroggins, you know that it is hard for her to keep secrets about herself. Danyelle has a no secrets concerning her life and most people do not understand how she could write about such personal details of her life and not be ashamed.

       After this, you may just understand her a little better and have some more nuggets to add to your Scroggins knowledge bank.

       Here is a list of ten things to help you discover the truths about her and her life.

1. At age 10, she decided she would never be blackmailed. As a girl growing up, she watched the soaps with her mother. After seeing the effects of blackmail and realizing the secret still gets out, Danyelle decided at a young age to just tell on yourself. Ha-ha! Some might say, “That’s crazy.” Nevertheless, to her, it is the very reason her ministry book spoken, and written words thrive. God gave her method to this madness years later…You Revealed So That Others May Be Healed.

2. A teenage mother who still adores children. Although she never saw herself as a parent but always had a knack for getting the best out of children. It was not until she became a teenage mother that she totally became a magnet for children: her very own and others. Danyelle said, “My daughter Raiyawna became the saving grace for my flesh because I never wanted my daughter to grow up feeling some sort of way about my moral choices. I wanted her to look up to me and allow me to be her first role model.” Well, it worked because not only is she the role model to her daughter, she is to her two other children, four godchildren, and a slew of others who call her, Mom.

3. At age 12, she had her first marital counseling session. The mother of her friend was going through relationship challenges, and Danyelle began to tell her some things she could do to make things better in her relationship. WOW! Now she counsels couples on a weekly basis concerning marriage.

4. Her first job was at McDonald's. At age 16, she worked at McDonald's for two weeks and ended up walking out of the job when some unruly teens trashed the restroom.

5. Now&Later candy is her favorite. Give the chick a piece of Now&Later, and you will be her best friend for life.  She loves all flavors, but green apple is her absolute favorite.

6. She is obsessed with the Golden Girls and stills to this day gets in a rerun or two weekly. Her favorite character is Blanche Devereaux, played by Actress Rue McClanahan because she shows how she would be if Jesus had not saved and turned her life around.

7. She was never committed to anything until she became a pastor. She fancied being able to do whatever she wanted whenever she wanted to and just when she thought she was celebrating life her way, God called her into ministry, which eventually led to becoming a pastor. Danyelle believes that she had never gone to anything faithfully, not even school, without becoming bored and eventually dreading to go until she became a pastor. Now, it nearly hurts her heart to be absent from a Sunday morning service.

8. Got saved not in church but on a 747 between LAX and Tokyo International. It was up in the sky where she asked God to come into her heart and save her soul, and He did just that. She got off the plane with a new mission and a new determination.

9. The older sister who acts as the second mother. Her three siblings are younger, but all know just who to call whenever they need someone to call in a favor from the Lord for them.

10. Prayer time for Danyelle is more like watching a few prime time shows. She prays a lot; this discipline has made her life more fulfilled and joyful.
